Tucson, AZ (AHN) - A young man's murder-suicide in 2005 is now being blamed on a cult in which the man's mother was a leader.
Ricky Rodriguez, who stabbed his former nanny to death in his Arizona apartment, and then fled to the desert of California where he committed suicide by shooting himself, is now identified as acting based on the teachings of the cult known as "The Family International."
Former members of the cult gave accounts revealing that they witnessed Rodriguez having sexual encounters with his mother Karen Zerby. This, they said, was a practice in adherence to the tenets of the cult regarding adult-child sex, as promulgated by cult founder and self-proclaimed prophet David Berg, who according to the United Press International referred to himself as "Mo," short for Moses.
"I actually witnessed Karen Zerby having intercourse with her own son, Ricky Rodriguez, at age 11," Davida Kelley, a former cult member, told CNN.
Don Lattin, author of "Jesus Freaks", a book that exposed the cult's activities and history, explained that Berg had identified Karen Zerby as his Queen, and encouraged the sexual relationship between her and Rodriguez, as he "wanted his child to embrace sexuality, to be a sexual being as an infant and growing up."
Although he left the cult in 2001, Rodriguez reportedly suffered extreme trauma from the experiences, and vowed revenge on his mother. His statements were documented in a videotape he made in 2005, in which he was shown saying "She's gonna pay dearly, one way or another," all the while loading guns and holding a knife.
Rodriguez then went to murder his former nanny Angela Smith, who Kelley identified to have been "one of the many adults that had intercourse with Rick Rodriguez."
Rodriguez failed to find his mother, and before dying called wife Alixcia Munumel, saying "Baby, I love you...Come die with me."
