Why is the site down?
4chan.org is currently down due to being hit by two distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, in the 2-3gbit/sec range. The site will return once these attacks stop.
Who is attacking it?
We've received mixed reports. Some of the people who are believed to be responsible include: Lulznet, 7chan, and "Kakama5". We don't have a definitive answer at this time.
What can be done about it?
Nothing, apart from waiting. We don't have the capability to filter over two gigabits of traffic per second, nor do we have a pipe large enough to accomodate it.
What is the current ETA?
Your guess is as good as mine—I wish I had a real answer for this! Unfortunately, it's all up to the person(s) perpetrating the attack.
What happens if it doesn't stop?
We have some contingencies in place, but they'll take a fair amount of time and money to implement. Right now we're just hoping the parties involved will cease their attack and move on to more worthwhile endeavors.
What can we do to help?
Just hang tight and check back on this page periodically for updates. Spread the word: let your friends and other sites know about the existence of this blog and what the current situation is.
This news is very refreshing to hear. Without 4chan I will not get my daily life. I hope 4chan will be helped. I think 4chan needs some professionals working in their corner as far as network security and controls go. the chans as of late have been under DDoS attacks or shut down. There is such as karma, and the chans that decide to DDoS other chans will eventually get figured out and then wiped off the face of the internet.
Recent Update from moot:
"Well that was fast. Not long after putting this blog up we've received word that the attacks will no longer continue. Here's to hoping that statement holds true!
We're aiming to have things back up and running within the next few hours." (posted at 10:45)
